Next step for Rory McIlroy – winning the Grand Slam
Rory McIlroy had a terrific 2012 season, having won the Tour money list on both sides of Atlantic. Above all, he won the second major of his career by winning the PGA Championship at Kiawah by a record margin.
With the kind of form he is in, the Irishman has a perfect opportunity to become the first European to win a Grand Slam.
McIlroy was named Player of the Year on the PGA Tour and with records tumbling, the Ulsterman has his eyes set on the next year already.
The world number one had stunning last four months but he feels there is still plenty of room for improvement.
"I still feel I can improve in all aspects of my game, add more variety and a couple of shots here and there”, McIlroy said.
McIlroy wants to compete at every other major, but still feels that what lacked this season was the fact that he did not contend in all the majors.
"If there was a disappointment this year, it's that I contended only once at the Majors. I'd love to be in contention at all four next year and at least give myself a chance to win".
Currently, the Irishman is playing some excellent golf and if he can continue this form starting next season, then surely he can achieve the career Grand Slam.
If the world number one goes to the Masters in good shape, unlike last year when he went to the event with haphazard preparations, then he will surely leave behind the likes of Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson.
McIlroy is favourite for the Green Jacket following his terrific last four months. He is rated 9/2 for a victory and this makes perfect sense following his triumphs in the US Open and PGA Championship.
His success at the US Open will largely depend on the layout of the course. The US Open always comes up with a dodgy course setup.
McIlroy used to have problems when playing in windy conditions but the man from Belfast has improved on this aspect of his game.
Following his victory at Kiawah, it can be said that he is perfectly comfortable in windy situations.
Winning the Claret Jug will be a major achievement for McIlroy, but will not be easy. Still, if he manages to win the Green Jacket and Claret Jug, he will become the first European to achieve a Grand Slam.
