Next stop on Born To Sea’s agenda: Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown
Camelot might have won the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, but it was not without a fight. The John M. Oxx trained, Born To Sea, gave him a serious fright in the closing stages of the race, but it was the Aidan O’Brien trained runner, who prevailed
in the end.
Born To Sea’s performance was at the Curragh was immensely appreciated by his connections, as he just finished 2 lengths adrift of Camelot on a ground that was extremely testing at about 1 mile and 4 furlongs.
Rider Johnny Murtagh brought the best out of him, and the duo tried their best, but it clearly wasn’t their day.
As a result of this commendable victory, the son of Invincible Spirit, out of mare Might, make his way to Leopardstown to compete in the 1 mile and 2 furlong Group 1 Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes on 8th September, 2012 at
Leopardstown.
John M. Oxx was immensely delighted the effort the three-year-old puts into every race as he told the media that:
"Every time he runs, he runs better than the previous time.
"I thought he had him (Camelot) for a while, but the last 50-100 yards the ground sorted him out.
"He just flagged a bit at the end, but he's beginning to make his own mark.
"He's tough and genuine and takes his races very well.
"We may aim Born To Sea for the Irish Champion Stakes.
"Whether or not he'd have a run beforehand I don't know."
Owned by Christopher Tsui, the colt has competed in six starts and scored once. Connections were hoping that he’d able to defeat, Camelot, but there’s always next time.
Sooner or later, the Sunderland Holdings Ltd bred colt will return to the form that he exhibited in his maiden, when he defeated G.M. Lyons charge, Pearl In the Sand, by 2 lengths at the Curragh in the Irish Field Blenheim Stakes in September, 2011.
The bay colt is a half-brother to Sea The Stars, who is also extremely talented, with eight victories out of his nine career starts.
