Next up: South African Women’s Open
Great news for golf fans! The oldest women pro tournament is back and this time it is co-sanctioned by Ladies European Tour and the Women’s Professional Golf Association of South Africa.
South African Women’s Open is considered to be one of the greatest golfing tournaments of the golf calendar and this year, it is no different. It is a perfect opportunity for the South African women golfers to compete against top international players.
Commenting on the tournament, Alexandra Armas, Executive Director of the LET said, “The LET has made great strides growing the game around the world, and we are pleased that we can finally return to South Africa for such an auspicious event”.
This year, the list of participants highlights the efforts of the South African golf community to encourage the sport in South Africa and invite top women pros to play in the historic Selborne Park Golf Club in KwaZulu-Natal.
The entry list comprises of 84 players, 56 of whom come from Ladies European Tour and 14 from the Women’s Professional Golf Association of South Africa.
To encourage amateur players, seven South African amateurs are also invited. As usual, the remaining seven entries are promoter invitations.
The tournament dates back to 1988. This year, the course will cover 54 holes, which will prove to be quite a challenge for all the players.
The players are already excited about the tournament and leading players have confirmed their availability.
South Africa’s number one Lee-Anne Pace says, “I am extremely proud that the South African Women’s Open is back on the schedule and that our leading professionals can once again have the chance to compete against the world’s best on home soil”.
Lee-Anne Pace will face tough competition from last year’s winner of the tournament, Tandi Cuningham, also from South Africa.
She has confirmed that she will participate and hope to successfully defend her title.
Lee-Anne Pace is determined to win for two reasons. The cup will add another feather to her already 5-win glory.
She also wishes to keep the cup in South Africa. She says, “And I can guarantee that we will do everything we can to make sure the trophy stays in South Africa”.
However, the foreign players are also anxious to win the cup. The presence of Ladies European Tour players ensures that a number of top professionals from around the world will compete against the local players.
If anyone wins, she would become the seventh professional to steal the cup away from the local players.
The players will compete for a prize of €260,000. This amount is to keep the status of the South African Women’s Open as the most prestigious golf event in South Africa.
