Nguyen Tien Minh penetrates into Men’s Singles third round of the 2011 US Open Grand Prix Gold
Vietnam’s top seed shuttler, Nguyen Tien Minh, penetrated into the Men’s Singles third round after winning his second-round battle against USA’s Agusriadi Wijaya Amphie at the 2011 US Open Grand Prix Gold, in California, USA, on July 12.
The third seed, Tien Minh, who is currently ranked at Number Nine in the Men’s Singles world rankings, progressed into the next stage by crushing Amphie in straight games without showing any mercy, in just 28 minutes.
The Vietnamese, who is known for his fighting spirit, opened the first game with an aggressive approach. His strategy to push the opponent on the back foot worked really well, as he executed powerful smashes followed by net strokes which earned him a lead
of 11-6 in the opening half.
After getting back into the court from a one-minute interval, the third seed remained ahead of Amphie, who was quite helpless against the powerful strokes and sharp reflexes of his rival. Tien Minh advanced smoothly towards the concluding phasing of the
set and finished it in just 15 minutes, with a wonderful score of 21-14.
Amphie, who was having the support of the huge home crowd, tried to accelerate his speed in the opening points of the second game, but failed to maintain the pace towards the end of the first-half of the set. Tien Minh controlled the pace of the bird and
started to dictate the rallies, which moved his challenger in all areas of the court to return the shuttle.
Until the one-minute break in the second set, Tien Minh was leading by an 11-5 margin. Amphie failed to play a fast game, which helped his opponent to dominate the rallies. The Vietnamese sailed smoothly in the second-half of the set and ended it in only
13 minutes, with the difference of 21-11. The score of this straight-set battle of 28 minutes was, 21-14 and 21-11.
In the third round, Tien Minh is set to play against India’s P Kashyap, who thrashed David Obernosterer of Austria in straight-sets.
