Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh won a classic battle against Korea’s Lee Hyun Il, in the Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 Indonesia Open Premier Super Series, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday, June 22.
World Number Seven, Tien Minh, delivered a striking performance against the veteran, Lee Hyun, in an epic match which took three sets of scintillating badminton from both players. The seventh seed emerged the winner of this 50-minute long encounter by playing
to his full potential.
Tien Minh was impressive in his speed and stroke placement from the initial stage of the first set. He did not drop his speed at any stage of the game and managed a reasonable difference of 11-8 in the first part of the set.
Lee Hyun tried to tackle the speed of his opponent by becoming fast at the net, but he failed to drive the rallies effectively. Tien Minh played positively to avoid unforced errors, which worked well for him as he clinched the first set by a decent margin
of 21-15, by consuming 17 minutes.
Lee Hyun bounced back in the second game by utilising his extensive experience. The Korean, this time, made no mistake in setting up a good lead in the opening half of the set by playing with great precision.
Lee Hyun’s shot selection and placement was incredibly perfect as he made his opponent work hard for getting the bird. At the interval, the Korean was leading with a 3-point margin of 11-8.
After the break, the Korean continued his supremacy in the second set against the Vietnamese, who made many mistakes. Tien Minh lost the second game to the Korean with a difference of 15-21, in 18 minutes.
Tien Minh geared up his speed from the starting points of the third set and was successful in maintaining pressure on his rival. The Korean made many mistakes in this set, which helped Tien Minh to win the game with a big difference of 21-13, in just 15
minutes. The 50-minute match ended with a score of 21-15, 15-21 and 21-13.
In the second round, Tien Minh will take on either China’s Wang Zhengming or Germany’s Marc Zwiebler.
