  1. If you are 27 years old, or have been in the NHL for 7 years you are a UFA. Anybody under 27, who has not been in the NHL for 7 years is a RFA.

And just as I post this Tuna Spearer posts the best explanation there is.

  2. Im not reallly sure but i think teams can designate some players as one or the other, or maybe its in the contract.

But the no trade clause has nothing to do with it since in your sitution the contract would be over.

  3. they sign that in there contract

  4. It is based on the age of the player, years in the league and maybe years with the team.

  5. No A restricted Free Is a free agent that hasn't been signed by the original club. you can become a UFA after seven years or if you reach a certain age. I'm not exactly sure..

  6. I think there are a few other ways to be an RFA after a contract year, but as i understand it the rule is players coming off entry level deals are RFA's, otherwise they are UFA's.  Having had a no trade clause isn't relevant once that contract is up.

  7. I think they are unrestricted free agents if they only signed for the team for one year and they are restricted free agents if they signed for the team for more than one year. I'm not so sure.

  8. to tell you the truth that is an awesome question but i would imagine it would have to do something with what the players want

  9. Hi

The no trade clause has to do with contract issues. It is agreed by both club and player and anyone can have it.

To be a UFA  is a player that is without contract

Depending on age and games played a player maybe a restricted free agent. There is the under 25 group and the under 27 group. Both groups have games played and require a qualifying offer from the clubs that have the rights to the player. If no qualifying offer is made then then the player becomes an unrestricted free agent (ufa). NHL.com goes into more depth if you would like and there is couple other groupings just those are the most common.

    Thank You

  10. These are all issues that are written into the contract upon signing.  the contract will specify at the end of its term what the player will be, a UFS or RFA and if there is a no trade clause in palce while the contract is being honored
