Niall Quinn and Darren Bent apologise to Sunderland fans
Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn and key striker Darren Bent have apologised to Sunderland fans after the 5-1 thrashing handed out by Newcastle United last Sunday.
The defeat was Sunderland's worst loss in any match between the two teams for 54 years and both individuals have said that it was not acceptable. Only a handful of Sunderland fans who made the trip stayed
to the final whistle.
"It is entirely appropriate that we apologise to our fans. Whilst acknowledging the hurt that this defeat has caused, I would like to emphasise that everyone at this club will face the music together,"
said Quinn.
On the one hand it is encouraging to see high profile members in the football club coming out and taking responsibility. On the other hand it is worrying to see a team that has a defence, which can be
ripped open.
Areas to improve on
Sunderland has many areas to improve and work on during training this week. The levels of effort and off the ball work were not acceptable and this is where Newcastle gained their advantages.
The defence looked as though it had never played together before. The back line has to stay solid and there need to be less examples of players breaking this line and leaving space in behind for strikers
to exploit.
Sunderland needs to be able to rise to the occasion during big games. As soon as Kevin Nolan scored his first Newcastle goal heads started to drop and the team looked defeat, which is not the attitude
that manager Steve Bruce desires.
"We are all sorry about the result. It's important someone came out and apologised to the fans, who are the people who pay money to watch the games. We let a lot of people down. We know the fans are hurting
and believe me, the manager and the players are hurting as badly as you are," added Bent.
Betting advice
Bet in play with Sunderland for the next one or two games until it's clear the side has recovered from this defeat.
