Niall Quinn takes up a international development role at Sunderland, as owner Ellis Short appointed chairman
Reports confirm the Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has stepped down and has been replaced by Ellis Short, the owner of the Black Cats, as the new chairman. The official statement on the club’s website confirmed Quinn had left the chairman’s role and was
now taking up a new international development role for the Premier League side.
It seems the change in his position at the club has been consensual, with Quinn having been recently linked with a move to Manchester City as the chief executive. Short’s appointment as the new chairman is with immediate effect and Quinn revealed he felt
the change would benefit the club.
Quinn said on the club’s official website:
“He'll be a fantastic chairman and taking this role on speaks volumes about his ambition for the club.”
It is still not entirely certain what Quinn’s new position at the club requires him to do, but his duties has been described to be “developing Sunderland’s profile and business interest overseas.” The owner revealed that despite the minor change, the management
of the club remained the same.
Short said in an interview:
“With financial fair play rules coming into effect it is essential for the long-term success of the club that we develop interests on a global scale and there's no-one better than Niall to sell the ethos of Sunderland to an international audience.
He has been keen to drive this change for some time and I agree that it's the way forward for us now.”
Short insisted that Quinn had not been removed to a lesser role, in fact he had been give a much more important role. With the club looking to expand, the Black Cats needed someone like the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Republic-of-Ireland-c2987 international to handle their affairs
on a global scale.
The Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne shared similar views to Short and revealed Quinn would be taking up his new duties sooner than later. After a conference in London, Quinn will be representing the club in Korea, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/India-c750, Abu Dhabi and
Africa in the upcoming months.
Byrne revealed:
“Niall is widely known and hugely respected throughout the world of football.
His profile, coupled with his vast knowledge of the game and the business, means he is perfectly placed to bring Sunderland to the forefront internationally.”
