  1. Nothing spectacular will happen in 2012 (unless you count the Olympics in London).

It is just a myth which mysteriously propagates (mostly because of the History Channel and YouTube)

The Mayan culture/society/way of life is long since dead

Therefore as an end to "the world" 2012 was a wildly optimistic estimate for them!

And anyway – that is the wrong interpretation of the whole calander thing – it’s just the end of a cycle. And since calendars are based on astronomical motions of one kind or another, they are inherently cyclic. Our western calendar ends on December 31st every year!

Planet X/Nibiru does not exist. If it did we would have found it by now. We have mapped the sky in the infrared several times in the last 25 years (including WMAP, IRAS etc), and it would show up. It is not there. We would have found it if it existed. So all the nonsense about the return of Nibiru/Planet X is just that – nonsense

There is no scientific evidence for the existence of Nibiru

Furthermore, at the distance it must be to hit us in a little over 4 years, it would be reflecting enough light from the sun to be detectable.

Thanx to previous question from Brant and answer from bikenbeer2000, we know how bright it should be by now – it would have a apparent magnitude of 7.4 – which would not be visible with the naked eye – but easily visible in a modest telescope and would have been spotted by amateur. If there was a conspiracy to keep it quiet – it would be out of the bag by now.

Ask someone where it is supposed to be, get a pair of binoculars and look for it.

The videos on YouTube that purport to have evidence are disingenuous to say the least. They put together pictures of other objects (e.g. Jupiter, comets even a dust shell around a distant red giant star) and try to scare people. There is no validity to their claims. They present NO EVIDENCE at all.

As for the predicted catastrophes – the most popular one seems to be the Pole Shift!

The sun will have a pole reversal that year – it has one every 11 years – it is not a problem.

The earth’s magnetic field is less predictable –

but is still nothing to worry about: we know that the magnetic field does not collapse in the process of reversing polarity- if it did, there would be major extinctions that correlate with the geologic record for pole reversals - there is no correlation.

  2. I second Richard R.

  3. NO-- you are the second posting RIGHT NOW about this myth-- we get 100s of this question every month on Answers-Astronomy topic.

I really would like to know why we keep getting this question? It is complete nonsense--- and totally untrue.

  4. I HAVE NO CLUE HAT THAT IS FIRST OF ALL SO YEAH..[LMFAO]

  5. Just a hoax.  The History channel, an organization far more interested in profit than facts, ran a documentary on the end of the Mayan Calendar and the possible end of the world.  The whole idea was ludicrous but middle school students fell for the hoax in numbers.  "IT MUST BE TRUE, I SAW IT ON TV!!!"

Most Middle school students do not possess a scientific background or a skeptical mind frame, and many simply are not very intelligent.  Remember: half the population is below average intelligence.  An unintelligent, gullible, and undereducated population is a godsend for corporations.  These students actually spend a couple of hundred dollars for a pair of shoes just because they see a sports star endorse the things.

To tell the truth I don't know why I bother to try to educate people who have contacted this meme.  Obviously if they believe this nonsense they aren't very intelligent.  I confess I find dealing with retarded individuals to be annoying.  It doesn't really matter what they believe and it four years when nothing happens, they will simply find something equally stupid to believe in.  Why should I "cast pearls before swine"?   Alas I'm a librarian and we hate ignorance.

  6. No. Hoax. There is no proof of any object that is going to kill us all in 2012.

  7. Maggie is right, nothing will happen. The whole 2012 thing is NOT science.

Predictions of the end of the world have been made thousands of times.....all incorrectly....obviously because we are still here! Here, click on this site, you'll see how many times they've been wrong http://www.armageddononline.org/failed_a...

  8. There is evidence that Nibiru exists. I dont believe it will be the end of the world. Every time the planet passes we will not be at the same stage of our orbit so i very much doubt it will effect us the same way every time.

The Sumerian tablet translations which apparentley said 2012 will be the end of the world has only been translated by one man. And he is a illuminati member so I would nto trust his translation.

I believe the 2012 hype is a big distraction to keep people busy worring and not focused on what is going on in the world stage.
