Nicaragua defeats Costa Rica 3-2 in U19 Continental Championship – Volleyball news
A Preliminary round Group A match of the Boy’s U19 Norceca Continental Championship took place between Nicaragua and Costa Rica on Monday, July 2, 2012. The matches are being staged in the Mexican city of Tijuana. The venue of the contest was the Centro
de Alto Rendimiento which housed 250 spectators. The clash between the two sides was thrilling as it went on to five long sets but it was the squad from Nicaragua that sealed the deal on Costa Rica by 3-2.
Nicaragua took a total of two hours and 14 minutes to secure its first international win in the tournament at the following final set scores: 25-19, 25-27, 22-25, 25-19 and 16-14.
The coach of the Nicaragua squad Osman Hernandez, shared his views at the win by making the following statements, “This was our first win at the Norceca level. It is hard when you don’t have that international exposure. There were some moments during the
match when the players were down and in some others they could assimilate this kind of pressure.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Costa Rican side Alberto Travieso expressed himself in the following manner, “It is difficult to coach or have a plenty integration of your players with a little time. You practically start to know them to find that game
accuracy you look for really costs you a lot.”
Despite the fact that the Costa Ricans did not go home with a win, Cesar Gomez was able to give his team something to be proud of by tallying the highest number of points in the match by putting up a score of 26. On the other hand, the player who led the
Nicaragua squad was Bryan Antonio Orozco as he was able to contribute 14 points.
The first set of the match started off with Nicaragua coming out strong as they were able to take an early lead. Costa Rica tried to keep the score level and they remained successful for a time but after some time, Nicaragua was able to widen the gap. Once
Nicaragua had sped ahead, Costa Rica could not stop their opponents from getting an opening set win at 25-19.
The Costa Ricans stepped up their game in the second set and provided a significant challenge to Nicaragua. As a result, the frame went tight with the outcome of the set uncertain till the end when Costa Rica got hold of the second set at 27-25.
The win enabled the Costa Ricans to perform well in the third set as well and they were able to seal the deal at 25-22. However, Nicaragua responded in the fourth set by staying dominant and taking the match to a fifth set as they secured the fourth one
at 25-19. The final set was highly competitive but Nicaragua was able to bag it at 16-14.
