Nicaragua heads for quarterfinals of U-19 Continental Championship – Volleyball news
A Group A match of the NORCECA Boys’ U-19 Continental Championship was held on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 in Tijuana Mexico. The two teams that competed against each other in the preliminary round of the tournament were Nicaragua and French Saint Martin. The
match was played at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento sports hall where a total of 100 spectators had come to watch the show that ended in a win for Nicaragua after they bagged three sets back to back.
Nicaragua made a clean sweep over French Saint Martin in 57 minutes at the following final set scores: 25-10, 25-22 and 25-9. Nicaragua has been able to move on to the quarterfinal round of the championship with the win.
The coach of the Nicaragua squad, Osman Hernández, expressed his joy at the victory in the following words, “We played against a very tough and strong team like French Saint Martin. If we had not won this match, the situation would have been very complicated.
Tomorrow we have another tough match but we have nothing to lose and the guys are very happy.”
On the other hand, the French Saint Martin coach, Stephen Thierry, shared his feelings at the loss of his team in the following manner, “We had some errors in the second set, but we hope to correct those mistakes when we get back home.”
The top scorer of the match was Ruben Alejandro Mora from Nicaragua as he put up 17 points for his side. Mora was helped by his team mate Douglas Alexander Chavez who contributed 10 points of his own. On the French Saint Martin squad, the lead scorer was
Kareem Brooks who was able to put up only five points for his team.
Nicaragua was able to come out strong in the opening frame and march ahead with a significant lead. French Saint Martin tried to close in the gap but their defence proved to be too weak for the forceful onslaught of the squad from Nicaragua. As a result,
it took no time for Nicaragua to make an easy win out of the first set of the match at 25-10.
The loss of the first set put some vigour in French Saint Martin and they were able to take the advantage in the second frame. The score was close for some time but near the end of the set, Nicaragua managed to pull up ahead. French Saint Martin tried to
overcome their opponents but Nicaragua remained successful in bagging the second set at 25-22.
With two sets down, the French Saint Martin team lost all motivation which made it a fairly easy job for Nicaragua to assert themselves in the third frame of the game and head towards the close of the set in speed to seal the deal at 25-9.
