Does anyone know the national flower of Nicaragua? Or any other facts about Nicaragua...

  1. The national flower of Nicaragua is the Plumeria alba, locally known as "Sacuanjoche" Laos (in South East Asia) is the only other country to have the flower as their national flower. They call it "Champa" in Laos.

    Other interesting facts about Nicaragua:

    It has the 2 largest lakes in Central America (Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua), one of which is the 2nd largest lake in Latin America and 20th largest in the world.

    Lake Nicaragua is the only fresh-water lake in the world that has sharks in it, they are called the "Nicaragua Shark" (Carcharhinus nicaraguensis).

    Ometepe, an island in Lake Nicaragua, was formed by two volcanoes and is joined by a small strip of land. Ometepe is also the largest volcanic island in a fresh water lake in the world.

    Flor de Caña, a delicious rum made and manufactured in Nicaragua, has won over 80 international awards and is sold in many countries around the world (including Taiwan, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, all of Central America, Venezuela, the U.S. and others).

    El Güegüense (also known as Macho Ratón) is a satirical drama and was the first literary work of post-Columbian Nicaragua. It was awarded as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" in 2005 by UNESCO.

    Nicaragua is the only country in Central America and one of six in Latin America to have 2 proclaimed masterpieces by UNESCO.

    In 2001 UNESCO proclaimed the Garífuna's language, dance and music as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" in Nicaragua, Honduras, and Belize.
