Nicaragua to clash with Costa Rica for fifth position in the tournament – Volleyball News
Men’s Under-19 teams from Nicaragua and French Saint Martin collided in a NORCECA Continental Championship match on Friday at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento in Tijuana, Mexico.
Nicaragua proved to be better in every aspect of the game and held off French Saint Martin for 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-14) victory. The match decision was out in less than an hour’s time. Around 100 spectators were in attendance of the match. Victory against
French Saint Martin enabled Nicaragua to reserve a spot in the classification final match for fifth position. Nicaragua will be challenged by Costa Rica in the classification match, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday.
Douglas Alexander Chavez of Nicaragua did justice to his role as a captain of the team. He performed well and emerged as the top-scorer of the match with a total of 10 points. He stood apart from others with a distinction for being the only player with double-figure
score in the match. His teammate Ivan Mejia settled for the position of second best-scorer of the match with 8 points. Kareem Brooks fought for French Saint Martin and added seven points.
Costa Rica was down with too many errors in the first set. They threw most of their serves into the net or just beyond the line. Nicaragua, therefore, benefitted from mistakes of opponents and earned lead. Costa Rica was locked to a low score of 10 in the
first set when Nicaragua announced first-set win (25-10).
Comparatively saying, Costa Rica improved in the second set but still it was not enough to save them from loss with a deficit of six points (25-19). Nicaragua captured third set by posting 25-14 on board and declared match victory.
The Captain of French Saint Margin Fresnet Fabre commented about the match. He said: “I feel We have played better as the tournament goes on. We defended the ball and there were some elements that went out of our control, and were not in our favor.”
His counterpart from Nicaragua Douglas Chavez has somewhat different opinion about the match. He stated: “I feel we have decreased our level a little bit, but tomorrow it will be very important, because if we finish with a victory, we will return home with
a fifth place.”
Nicaragua’s coach Osman Hernandez regarded it as average performance by his team. However, he was happy to see the improvement especially in reception. He urged his team to focus on the next game for fifth position in the match.
