Niccolo Bonacchi seizes Boys 50m backstroke gold: Day four – European Junior Swimming Championships
Niccolo Bonacchi of Italy seized gold medal of the Boys 50m backstroke on day four of the 2012 European Junior Swimming Championships in Antwerp, Belgium on Saturday, July 7.
Bonacchi stayed dominant over his challengers from the start of the race and made his way to the finishing end for gold medal. He showed no signs of slowing down throughout the single lap event and sprinted his way towards the wall for the title.
He continued his gruelling pace and emerged on the starting blocks with the timing of 25.46 seconds for gold medal. The champion remained marginally ahead of his following swimmer, Tomer Zamir of Israel, who proved his eligibility for silver medal of the
event.
Zamir remained 0.30 seconds slower from the gold medallist and secured second position of the discipline by touching the wall with an effort of 25.76 seconds.
Following that, the audience witnessed exhausting efforts of Viktar Staselovich of Belarus and Nikita Ul’Yanov of Russia for third spot.
Both swimmers tried their best to escape each other over the finishing end but failed to do so and ended in a joint finish for third position. The duo remained 0.12 seconds slower from the silver medallist and touched the wall with the same timing of 25.88
seconds for bronze medal.
Afterwards, the audience witnessed laudable effort of Antons Voitovs of Latvia, who finished fifth in the race. Voitovs stayed 0.27 seconds slower from upsetting his former finisher and tapped the finishing blockade with an effort of 26.15 seconds.
Sixth position of the event was secured by Philip Sikatzki of Germany who was only 0.12 seconds apart made his way to the other end of the pool by submitting a time of 26.27 seconds.
Last spot of the race was secured by Michail Kontizas of Greece, who remained just 0.03 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and failed to upset any of his challengers as he ended seventh with the timing of 26.30 seconds.
In addition, Bonacchi was overjoyed with his win in the backstroke discipline and shared his plans of accomplishing the same at superior levels.
