Nicolas Colsaerts makes a late charge at The Open Championship
Nicolas Colsaerts fired a five-under par 65 on Sunday to move 47 positions up the leaderboard and took the share of the seventh position in the third major event of the year, The Open Championship.
Colsaerts recorded three birdies, each on the front and back nine of the course, against a lone bogey that came on the third hole. It was his second 65 of the tournament, as he did that on Thursday too.
"It's difficult not to have a smile on my face," he told reporters. "I was quickly under par and gave myself chances a lot of times. There were still a few putts that didn't drop but it's great to come down the last couple of holes and have your game on.
It was very pleasurable".
According to him, his birdie on the opening hole was the best of all. "I hit a fantastic shot, got the round going and got in a great mood," he said.
Despite a great end to his campaign at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, he failed to get into contention for the top position on the leaderboard. A disastrous 77 on day two was the main reason behind his non-competitive score in the tournament.
As a result, he had to settle for a one-under par tournament score. The winning score was seven-under par, held by Ernie Els from South Africa.
He now aims to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team for the 2012 competition, scheduled two months from now, at the Medinah Country Club, Medinah.
However, he does not want to think about it too much, as he wants to do it without taking any pressure.
The Ryder Cup teams will be finalized five weeks from now. According to him, the less he will think about the qualification and the time period remaining, the more chances he will have to travel to Medinah to represent Continental Europe.
"I know it's going to be quite a jump, but then again there's still five weeks to go and there's still a lot of chances for me as well as the others to play well and shake things up. So I'd rather not think about it”.
