Nicholas Groenewald improves Australian Age Group Record: 2011 Australian Age Championships
Nunawading’s Nicholas Groenewald improved the record for the 100m back-stroke in 12-13 year's age category on day six of the 2011 Australian Age Championships. The championship is an opportunity for the national youth to demonstrate their skills in front
of the elites of Swimming Australia.
Nicholas, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the today’s final, clocked an astounding time of 59.00 seconds to break the Australian Record. Nicholas was followed by Somerset’s Seijun Ohori and Haileybury’s Lachlan Angel, who settled on the podium
for the silver and bronze medal in a time of 1:02.08 and 1:02.21 minutes.
Groenewald had an appreciable start that accompanied him with a significant lead in the first 10 metres of the race. He then rushed his way to the finishing wall, clocking a time of 28.74 seconds while Ohori posted a time of 29.94 seconds. Angel remained
evident for the bronze medal, clocking a time of 30.76 seconds. All of them demonstrated a challenging swim, but Groenewald attained a comfortable lead after the first tumble and finished the lap in a fastest time of 30.26 seconds to post 59.00 seconds on
the board.
Ohori and Angel were engaged in a neck-to-neck swim, as Angel pounced on Ohori’s shoulder in the last 25 metres of the race. Angel completed the second lap in a comparatively faster time of 31.45 seconds, but failed to overcome Ohori, who completed the second
lap in 32.14 seconds, posted 1:02.08 minutes. Angel’s 1:02.21 minutes effort placed him on the podium for the bronze medal.
Brothers’s Clyde Lewis and NZL’s Church also put a great show for the arena by completing their swims in 1:04.42 and 1:04.80 minutes for fourth and fifth fastest spot. They were followed by Surrey Park’s Leo Wong and NZL’s Walkington, who appeared sixth
and seventh in a time of 1:04.94 and 1:05.41 minutes respectively. Eighth spot was secured by Jackson Govers of Kalamunda in a time of 1:06.48 minutes.
Groenewald expressed extreme happiness after improving the National Record, as this was his last year in 12-13 year's age-bracket.
