Nicholas Tombazis: Ferrari looking to be competitive in 2012 season – Formula 1 news
Ferrari chief designer Nicholas Tombazis says they are aiming to be competitive at the highest level in the 2012 Formula 1 season.
Tombazis explained that the Ferrari team is working towards a very competitive strategy so that when they arrive in Australia next season, they are considered competitive enough to be challenging the top ranks.
In their quest for a win, they also realise that other teams are also working hard towards the same goal, and the team is not taking anything for granted.
The Scarlet team has been uncompetitive through the initial stages of the season for past couple of years, and the team is looking to change that.
They are trying to go for an aggressive strategy for their car for next season but Tombazis emphasised that it will not be modelled on the dominant Red Bull car, but will still be competitive enough.
“You can't ignore your competitors: if Red Bull wins, you can't say 'I'll just mind my own business',” Tombazis said.
“But it's not just Red Bull having interesting solutions: there are also slower cars with solutions worthy of consideration. You can't hide behind excuses. I think, however, that next year's car will have many different solutions, all ours,” he said.
He added, “And it would not be fair to say it's a Red Bull, absolutely. It will be a Ferrari, it will be different in various areas, with new solutions in other areas, maybe taken from other cars. It will be a mix.”
He also mentioned that the team has learnt from the failures of the late introduced tweaks to their car, even though they did not have enough time to test them out as much as they would have liked to.
He explained further how they understood exactly what has not worked for them and they intend to fix it completely now. He further added that it would have taken too much time during the season to do it and they instead chose to work on their car for the
new season.
That is the main reason the Maranello squad has not been as competitive as they would have liked to be.
