Nick Craig of Frensham Pond clinches British D-One National Championships at Queen Mary Sailing Club
Sail number 15, Nick Craig representing Frensham Pond Sailing Club, showed a convincing run on both days of 2011 British D-One National Championships. Craig made it to the first podium spot with eight points after sailing in six races, which included one discard race. The event was the very first edition of the championships hosted by Queen Mary Sailing Club.
Fantastic weather greeted the fleet with ideal winds on the first day of competition. A F3 to F4 breeze was blowing over the race course at Queen Mary Sailing Club along with gusts around F5, which was a favourable condition to make a superb sail.
Craig dominated the first day racing with some excellent sailing skills and hit the top spot brilliantly with three race victories. He was closely followed by Andy Couch of Rudyard Lake Sailing Club in first two races but tumbled down in Race 3. However, Couch was able to clinch second spot at the conclusion of Day 2 with 10 points after a 2, 2, 6 combination.
Second day brought grey skies and a bit lighter winds than those on Day 1. Craig, again on Day 2, showed impressive pace and started the day by winning first two beats but finished fourth in third race to claim the title by eight points.
Couch also displayed convincing form and occupied second podium with 11 points. Hayling Island Sailing Club’s David Hitchcock could pin the third position at the conclusion of D-One British Championships.
