Nick Cullen earns his first professional career win at the Indonesian Open – Golf News
Australian Nick Cullen registered his first professional career victory in the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia Open at the Emeralda Golf Club on Sunday, March 25, 2012.
Cullen scored a two-over par 74 in the final round of the event to end the week with a one-stroke lead over David Smail of New Zealand.
It would not be wrong to say that Cullen survived in the final round to earn his first victory of the career.
He had a four-stroke lead while playing the last six holes of the tournament. However, a triple bogey on the 14th hole gave a chance to his competitors to catch him on the leaderboard.
Yet, he succeeded in remaining on the top, as no other player in the field managed to score nine-under par 279, which was the aggregate tournament score made by Cullen.
After earning the victory, Cullen expressed his pleasure by saying that the win meant a great deal to him, as the Indonesian Open is sanctioned by both the OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation.
“This means the world to me," he said afterwards. "I have been practicing hard and playing well but I didn’t know what to expect when I came here".
The 27-year-old left hander added, “It is only my second time playing in Asia and it’s very different compared with playing at home particularly with a different climate and food”.
Smail led the tournament in the first two rounds. However, a two-over par in the third round took him back to the second position while entering the final round.
However, a three-under par 69 on Sunday was not enough to surpass the faltering Cullen to remain at the second place at the end of the tournament.
“I’d like to have a win,” he said. “I haven’t had a win for seven years now. To finally stumble home would be nice”.
Michael Long, Yoshikazu Haku and David Oh tied for the third place with a two-stroke deficit to Cullen.
Michael Long carded seven-under par 65 in the final round to record the lowest score by any player throughout the week. Haku and Oh managed to score 68 and 71, respectively.
