Nick D'Arcy will not appear in the World Championship trials in Sydney – Swimming update
One of the most impressive butterfly swimmers from Australia, Nick D'Arcy, has suffered from an obscure illness and he will miss his chance to appear in the Australian Swimming Team selection trials in Sydney for the World Championships.
This means that D'Arcy, who is the world’s third fastest 200m butterfly swimmer, will not be able to represent Australia at the 2011 World Championships in July where the world’s best will face each other.
This is the third time in four years that the Australian butterfly champion is missing a world level major event. First, he was excluded from the Australian team going to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, then he was dropped from the 2009 Rome World Championships for attacking former swimmer Simon Cowley and now he will not be appearing in the 2011 World Championships.
Moreover, several tests have revealed that D'Arcy faces a liver problem but Australian Swimming Head Coach Leigh Nugent approves that the actual cause of his illness remains ambiguous. Nugent also believes that D'Arcy will qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
"It could have been something that was lingering there for quite a while and just reared its head or he contracted it recently - but they are unsure what it is," Nugent said.
He also articulated that D'Arcy’s illness might be the reason for his deteriorated performance at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, where D'Arcy being the world’s third fastest 200m butterfly swimmer failed to make his way to the finals. Despite a heart breaking performance, the Australian did not offer any justification for his crashing out of the games.
The 23-year-old D'Arcy has just started his training in January after recovering from the ankle surgery but now he is caught in a new dilemma.
Nugent also said that if D'Arcy has a goal in mind of being the best at the world event next year and then he could find his way to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. He also said that he has faced many upsets in his life but if he recovers from the illness fast, he will represent Australia in London 2012.
