Nick D’Arcy believes his bankruptcy will not obstruct his participation at the 2012 London Olympics
Pan Pacific silver medallist, Nick D’Arcy has shown utter confidence that his bankruptcy will not obstruct his participation at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
D’Arcy, who just returned to competitive swimming after recovering from the back and rib injuries, expressed that he was told his bankruptcy will not get in the way of his 2012 London Olympics quest.
The Australian butterfly veteran, who won a gold medal in the 200m butterfly and a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly at the last week’s 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships, has just one month left to prove his mettle in the Australian squad for the London Games.
“At this stage it looks like there won't be any sort of inhibitions, going into trials. If I do the time and make the team, then I'll be on the Olympic team. But I've got to make the team first; one step at a time,” D’Arcy said.
“It is some relief, just having that off my shoulders and knowing if I make the team I will be selected based on my performance … but anything can happen at Olympic trials and complacency can be the death of you,” he added.
The 24-year-old D’Arcy was excluded from the Australian squad to the 2008 Beijing Olympics after a nightclub fight with the three-time Commonwealth gold medallist, Simon Cowley.
Consequently, Swimming Australia decided to expel D’Arcy from their Beijing Olympics’ roster, claiming that the swimmer has brought disgrace to his team.
Later on, Cowley, who filed a request for compensation of his damages, prosecuted D’Arcy and the court ordered D’Arcy to pay Cowley a sum of $180,000. After that, D’Arcy filed for bankruptcy, declaring that he has a debt of almost $800,000.
Nevertheless, D’Arcy has proved himself as a strong butterfly swimmer and he would be a key player in the Australian team to the London Olympics. Nonetheless, he would have to confirm his spot by posting a time under the Federation Internationale De Natation Amateur (FINA) ‘A’ Time Qualification Standard at the next month’s Australian Olympic trials in Adelaide, starting from March 15.
