Nick D’Arcy qualifies for the 2012 London Olympic Games – Swimming News
The controversial Australian swimmer, Nick D’Arcy has earned his spot in the Australian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games by winning gold medal of the Men’s 200m butterfly on fourth day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South
Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide.
The 24-year-old D’Arcy, who assaulted former Australian swimmer, Simon Cowley at a nightclub in 2008 and as a consequence was expelled from the Australian team to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, has finally made his way to the 2012 London Games.
After the assault, Cowley sued D’Arcy to get the compensation of damages and the court ordered him to pay Cowley a sum of $180,000. Nevertheless, D’Arcy filed for bankruptcy, claiming that he does not have enough resources to pay Cowley this huge amount
of money.
D’Arcy remained prominent for the gold spot of the event from the very start. He dominated his way into the preliminary round and then in semi-finals. With his immaculate effort, he won gold medal of the Men’s 200m butterfly in a phenomenal time of 1 minute
and 54.71 seconds.
His time remained comfortably under the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) A-Time Qualification Standard of 1 minute and 56.86 seconds.
D’Arcy was delighted with his incredible accomplishment in the distant butterfly discipline and said, “I'd probably go out to dinner with my parents and that's probably about it at this stage. I'll probably keep it a bit quiet this week and maybe have a
couple of friends over.”
While expressing his happiness, D’Arcy further added, “It's a fantastic feeling being able to go overseas and represent your country. I’m just honoured to be a part of it and repay some of my friends and family who have been behind me. It’s been pretty tough
and there's been some times when I wasn't sure if I was going to continue on but days like today make it all worth it.”
Furthermore, with his epic performance in the 200m discipline, D’Arcy will now compete with the 14-time Olympic champion, Michael Phelps of USA at the forthcoming Olympic Games.
