Nick D’Arcy should man up, says Simon Cowley lawyer Sam Macedone – Swimming News
Sam Macedone, the lawyer of former Australian swimmer, Simon Cowley has stressed that Nick D’Arcy should man-up and apologise to his client for what he did to him.
D’Arcy is the silver medallist of 200m butterfly at the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine.
Macedone expressed that D’Arcy has not stated his regret for assaulting the former Australian swimmer, Simon Cowley at a nightclub in 2008. The 24-year-old D’Arcy assaulted Cowley in 2008 on a night out with friends, celebrating his selection in the Australian
team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
As a result, D’Arcy was expelled from the team and subsequently was held ineligible to race at the selection trials for the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Following that, Cowley sued D’Arcy to pay the damages and the court ordered him to pay $180,000 for attacking Cowley. Nevertheless, D’Arcy filed for bankruptcy claiming that he would not be able to pay the compensation.
After a prolong hysteria, D’Arcy was finally allowed by the Australian Olympic Association to compete at the Australian Selection Trials for the 2012 Olympic Games. D’Arcy showed no leniency to his challengers and confirmed his place to London by clinching
gold medal of the 200m butterfly.
Just after confirming his berth to London Games, D’Arcy’s celebrations were halted by a series of questions, asking him if he regretted assaulting Cowley in 2008.
The word is that D’Arcy has no regret of his wrongdoing in 2008, but he said, “That's not something I have control over. People's opinion is always going to be what they think and they have a right to that, but I think for me the most important thing is
to control the controllables.”
On the other hand, while commenting on D’Arcy’s statement, Macedone said, “He controls whether he says sorry or not and whether he takes responsibility. All he has got to do is man up and say it and by not doing it, it's simply more detrimental to Simon.
It's like punching him in the face again.”
Macedone further added that if D’Arcy wins a medal at his first Olympics, it would pollute his celebration.
