Nick Diaz of Ultimate Fighting Championship fails drug test – Boxing news
Nick Diaz, former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion, WEC and IFC Welterweight Champion, was tested positive for marijuana metabolites.
The test was conducted for last Saturday’s UFC 143 show in Las Vegas by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
Diaz who was close to having a bout with Georges St-Pierre or a possible rematch with Carlos Condit, but now he is on hold until his penalty is decided. Nick lost to Carlos Condit through a unanimous decision at last weekend’s main event.
As of now, no penalty for Diaz has been imposed. According to Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada commission, Nick has to wait for his hearing and until then no penalty will be decided.
Unfortunately, Nick’s dream of a rematch with Carlos Condit will not be on the cards anymore. After his embarrassing defeat last weekend, Nick was hopeful of a rematch sometime soon. Even UFC wanted the same for both the fighters since the fight was too
close and fans were demanding another match. Most of all, even Condit accepted the rematch offer which was quite unusual.
For some reason, trainer and manager for Diaz, Cesar Gracie, had declined the idea of a rematch recently by saying, “Condit has accepted the rematch because he knows there's not going to be a rematch, bottom line.”
To many, this statement came as a shock since Diaz has been showing signs of desperation for the rematch. Kizer further added, “All results received thus far have been negative, except Mr. Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites. A complaint for disciplinary
action against Mr. Diaz has been filed.”
This is the second time in Diaz’s career that he has failed a drug test. He had previously lost his fight against Takanori Gomi for No Contest after he failed the drug test. Right now, nothing is for sure as to what will be his penalty.
However, it is sure by now that he will not be having a rematch with Condit anytime soon. Being a star fighter of this stature, it is quite a shock to learn that Diaz failed drug tests for the second time in his career.
