Nick Evans, Jose Reyes and Lucas Duda shine as New York Mets beat Florida Marlins 7-4 – MLB Update
The New York Mets batting powerhouse woke up in the 12th inning with their game snatching runs to beat the Florida Marlins’ helpless closer Jose Ceda 7-4 in the second outing of the three-game series at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami on Tuesday,
September 6.
The game was tied at the 4-all in the bottom of the ninth inning when Marlins’ centre-fielder Mike Cameron helped Greg Dobbs and Logan Morrison to score game tier runs. It remained tied at 4-all until the Mets’ batting squad combined to post three runs to
take their club into a 7-4 series tier win.
Angel Pagan singled to reach first base and Jason Bay pushed him to third with a line drive double. Nick Evans entered the plate and got Pagan to score the leading run with his line drive single to centre-field.
Bay went on third and Evans on first, when Ceda struck out Ronny Paulino and Ruben Tejada. However, the best shortstop in the Majors, Jose Reyes landed at the plate for his sixth at-bat and drove in to right-field, allowing Bay to score another run of the
inning. Evans moved to second base and Ceda permitted a walk to Justin Turner and Lucas Duda to give away another run. Mets finalised the top of the 12th inning to a 7-4 score.
Evans played three hits and all of these were go-ahead base hits including the one he played in the 12th inning.
"To be honest, he's got something to prove," Mets’ manager Terry Collins said. "You can't get designated as many times as he's been designated in the last couple of years and not have something to prove. He's taken this opportunity to show us he can hit."
Mets’ closer Josh Stinson worked a perfect bottom of the 12th inning to get his first save and the club’s 69th win in the 2011 regular season.
"It was exciting, glad to get that one out of the way," Stinson said. "Three games, got two of the big ones out of the way-first strikeout and first save."
Pagan scored two runs and one RBI on three hits and Bay, Evans and Paulino each scored a single run.
The Mets’ now have enough confidence to beat the Marlins in the series-finale, scheduled to be played at the same venue on Wednesday, September 7. Both teams will be looking to make the series to their names with their best possible effort. However, Mets
now have a psychological advantage to grab the series 2-1.
