Nick Faldo shows still shows confidence in Rory Mcllroy – Golf News
Three times Masters Winner, Nick Faldo still has faith in Rory Mcllroy who lost his opportunity to win the Masters. It was a nightmare for Rory who carded a horrific round of eight-over par, 80 on the decisive final day.
It was a final day when the leader crumbled and Charl Schwartzel came from behind the win the Masters and wear the green jacket. The final day at Augusta National produced fireworks and was certainly a battle-field, where the score board was changing after
every few holes.
Veteran Faldo has also been through this situation when he won in 1996. It was the Australian Greg Norman who failed to maintain his lead as Faldo won his third Masters.
Same happened in this case on the final day with Mcllroy. Norman then did not win a green jacket since 1996.
Faldo was also commentating during the four rounds of the Masters. He was amazed the way Schwartzel played and was disappointed to see Mcllroy lose his temperament.
Faldo said, "He's young and I am sure he will regroup and come back stronger. He was thrown in at the deep end and this is a serious deep end. You are there on your own, things get out of sync and you lose your tempo."
This was not the first time that Mcllroy played like this. Last year in The Open Championship, he was somewhat in a similar situation, where he had a score of 80 after leading the first round.
Although, he made his presence felt during all the three days in Masters, still there were high hopes from the youngster that he will win a major this year. At 21, it was a big achievement for him to maintain his lead during all the three days.
It would have been a more special moment for Rory if he went on to win the Masters. But as one says, golfers are lucky on one day and unlucky on the other.
Mcllroy in his post match interview said, "I'll have plenty more chances, I know, and hopefully it will build a bit of character in me as well. Hopefully if I can get myself back into this position pretty soon I will handle it a little bit better.”
The youngster from Northern Ireland still had a chance as he was starting his back-nine. It was the 10th where his misery started. From a triple-bogey on the 10th, he never recovered.
Now this is like adding fuel to fire. Mcllroy will be playing in the field of Malaysian Open where Schwartzel will also be among the contenders.
Only Mcllroy knows the feeling not to have won the Masters. It surely is going to be hard for the youngster to forget the final day but it will stay in back of his mind for a long time. He will have to get over it as there are a few players who still have
confidence in him.
