Nick Groenewald captures Boys 200m backstroke gold – 2013 GHSF Australian Championships
Nick Groenewald of Nunawading captured gold medal of the Boys 200m backstroke on first day of the 2013 GHSF Australian Age Swimming Championships in SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Adelaide on Monday, April 8.
The 15-year-old Groenewald won the hearts of the arena with his scintillating form in his age group event. He remained in a prominent lead over his closest competitor and captured the title in an Australian record time.
With his impeccable pace, he was 0.14 seconds ahead of his toughest competitor and surfaced on the finishing end for gold medal with the timing of 2 minutes and 02.54 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Damian Fyfe of Perth City, who was only a stroke behind and reached the podium for silver medal by touching the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 02.68 seconds.
The second best finisher was followed by Tristan Ludlow of Academy, who was 0.09 seconds behind and emerged on the finishing end for third position by producing a time of 2 minutes and 02.77 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Clyde Lewis of Nudgee, who was nearly four seconds slower and surfaced on the finishing end with the timing of 2 minutes and 06.64 seconds.
Lewis was traced by Dylan Lewis of Redlands, who was almost 1.50 seconds apart and settled on the wall for fifth position with an effort of 2 minutes and 08.02 seconds.
Sixth position of the event was obtained by Wi Coetzee of New Zealand, who was 0.96 seconds apart and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 08.98 seconds.
Coetzee was chased by Callum King of Nunawading, who was 0.40 seconds apart and surfaced on the wall for seventh position with the timing of 2 minutes and 09.38 seconds.
Eighth position of the event was obtained by Matt Kelly of Abbotsleigh, who was 0.49 seconds behind and clocked an effort of 2 minutes and 09.87 seconds.
In addition, Groenewald expressed happiness over his victory and claimed that he would like to make Australia proud at the international swimming events.
