Nick Heidfeld: Lotus Renault GP can still win races in future – Formula 1 news
Lotus Renault GP driver Nick Heidfeld has recently stated that the team can still win races in the future despite the fact that they are nowhere near the pace of the top running teams of Formula 1 this year.
Heidfeld claims that the team has proved in the past that they have the potential to win world championships even as they scored two world titles back-to-back with the help of Fernando Alonso and Flavio Briatore back in 2005 and 2006.
He did not state anything about the team’s chances of winning races this year though but he does believe that they can improve their car and probably score some amazing results in the coming years.
“That's very difficult to answer, because anything can happen in F1. Who would have committed five years ago to saying that Red Bull would be World Champions,” he said when asked about his team’s chances of winning the titles in the future.
Renault have not been able to score good results since 2006 as Alonso departed from the team to join McLaren in 2007. Even though he returned to the team the following year, Renault were just not the same anymore and since 2006, the team finished in 3rd place
which was in 2007.
The team is currently in 5th place in the constructors’ standings with just 66 points and it seems that their chances of challenging Mercedes GP for the 4th place are quite low. Mercedes GP have scored 80 points and with
the exception of the first couple of races, the team has been performing much better than Renault on a regular basis.
“For my team, we know that they are already double World Champions. It is not entirely out of thin air to believe in this team. But in purely statistical terms, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull have the better chance,” said Heidfeld.
Nick is currently in 8th place in the drivers’ standings and his performance this year in terms of consistency has been quite disappointing while his teammate Vitaly Petrov’s performance has been much more promising for the team.
