Nick Heidfeld: Monaco did not turn out as expected, need to improve qualifying – Formula 1 news
Renault Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld has said that the Monaco Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season did not turn out as was expected by the team.
The German added that the race pace is good for the Renault team but still some work is to be done on the qualifiers.
Heidfeld brought some points home for his team in the Monaco Grand Prix when he finished the race in eighth place but still thinks that something was missing in his performance.
After scoring only 4 points in the Monaco Grand Prix, the German said, “Naturally we went to Monaco expecting more from the weekend. We were predicting a better performance and more points all around. I do feel, however, that we have come away from that
weekend having learnt a lot more about the car.”
He added that some useful data was collected from the Monaco Grand Prix which will be useful in the next race in Canada.
However, Heidfeld said that still Renault need to work something out in terms of the qualifiers pace.
“This is actually the area I focus on the most with the team, with the aim of maximising our potential there. We know that qualifying is extremely important at all the F1 circuits,” commented Heidfeld.
The German added that in street circuits like Monaco, qualifiers become more important than the race because of the less overtaking nature of the tracks.
Heidfeld is yet to win his first race in Formula 1 despite taking more than 175 starts. Canada is something special for him because it was here that the German got his one of the best finishes when he finished second.
Talking about the Canadian track, Heidfeld said that the track is not as difficult as Monaco and Renault will look to improve their straight-line speed.
Renault are currently fourth in the constructors’ table with 50 points while Nick Heidfeld is sixth on the drivers’ championship table with 29 points.
