Nick Heidfeld: Monaco track bumpy and slippery, hope super-soft Pirelli will deliver – Formula 1
Renault’s Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld has said that the Monaco Grand Prix street track is unique in nature due to its bumpy and slippery layout and hoped that the super-soft Pirelli tyres will deliver.
Furthermore, the German added that the Pirelli tyres might play their role in overtaking in Monaco as they have done in five previous races of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
The German commented, “Monaco is a very different track from the Circuit de Catalunya. The circuit is not a dedicated race track which means it is used by public vehicles. It is bumpier than a race track, but the surface is actually very smooth meaning it
is very slippery.”
Pirelli will be bringing the super-soft compound tyres for the first time in the Monaco Grand Prix due to the soft nature of the track. It is still unknown that how many laps will the super-soft tyres last in Monaco but Heidfeld hopes that it turns out well.
“It will be interesting to see by how much it improves because these Pirelli tyres work very differently from the Bridgestone tyres we used previously. I expect tyres will be a key factor in Monaco, as they have been at the other races too,” stated Heidfeld.
Previously, Heidfeld put up a great performance in the Spanish Grand Prix when he finished 8th after starting the race from 24th position on the grid. His performance matched that of Red Bull’s Mark Webber in the Chinese Grand Prix,
where the Aussie started the race from the 18th position and finished third.
Heidfeld developed an oil leak in the third free practice session of the Spanish race. His car caught fire after which his team had to change the engine and the gearbox. The German missed the qualifiers but saved all set of tyres to try out his luck in the
race.
Heidfeld stated had there been one or two more laps in the race, he could have gone past the two Mercedes to take a much higher position.
The sixth round of the 2011 Formula 1 season continues in Monaco this weekend.
