Nick Heidfeld accepts driving mistakes in Friday practice session of Chinese Grand Prix – Formula 1
Renault driver Nick Heidfeld has accepted that he made a couple of driving errors during the Friday practice sessions of the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday, 15
April, 2011.
His run ended in P1 after he crashed out of the session at turn 10. He made another mistake in P2 at the 13th turn, but was lucky on that occasion to get back on track.
The German admitted, “It was just my mistake. These things unfortunately can happen, I think a lot of other people also went off a bit and had spins. Unfortunately I destroyed two wings, it shows it isn't easy today but it is not meant to be an excuse. I
just f***** up!”
The crash in P1 forced Heidfeld to use his older version of the front wing, as he destroyed the only one which the team had.
The veteran driver stated, “There was only one (wing), so even after the first crash I was back to the old spec, which is not as good as the one I have now but it should still be good enough to have a good performance.”
Although Heidfeld had a dreadful day, he was positive about his chances in the qualifiers and the race. The 33-year-old driver was quick in P1, as he clocked the fifth fastest time. He would have gained a few more positions in the order, but his run was
limited to just five laps.
The German then managed to have a complete run in P2, but was unable to be as quick as he was in the first session. He ended up eighth fastest overall and claimed that the result could have been a lot better if he had not committed some small mistakes. However,
the good news for him was that he was ahead of his teammate Vitaly Petrov in both the sessions on Friday.
Both the Renault drivers are currently on the same position in the drivers’ standings of the 2011 Formula 1 season with 15 points. The Russian was able to score a podium in the season opener at Melbourne whereas his partner achieved the same in the second
race of the season at Sepang. The team will look to repeat similar performance on Sunday in Shanghai.
