Nick Heidfeld confident about racing for Lotus Renault GP in 2011
After Robert Kubica’s horrific accident during a rally event recently, team Lotus Renault GP revealed that he will not be able to compete in the 2011 Formula 1 season and they will have to find an appropriate replacement for him.
After a lot of speculation and evaluation, the team revealed that they will choose either Nick Heidfeld or Bruno Senna to take Kubica’s place. The team tested both of these drivers at the pre-season test session that took place in Jerez recently and according
to Nick Heidfeld, he has done enough to secure a full season seat with Renault. However, he stated that topping the timesheets during the pre-season test sessions is not a big deal.
“Anyone can do that if they really want to, with little fuel and super soft tyres. I have the feeling I have passed this test. I could do no more than my best,” Heidfeld told the media.
Nick Heidfeld has not been the best driver in the sport statistically though and despite that, Lotus Renault GP believe that he has the ability to win races for them in the new season. Heidfeld might not be the best option for Renault but he is certainly
a better choice than Bruno Senna who has only competed in one Formula 1 season with Hispania Racing Team.
Team boss Eric Boullier said that Bruno Senna’s run was not a ‘test’ and in fact, it was just a normal run to prepare him for his role as a third driver of the team in 2011.
“Senna's day of testing was not to evaluate him, but rather to give him some mileage to prepare him in his role as the third driver,” Boullier said.
It is obviously going to be interesting to find out who the team signs but it seems that all the arrows are pointing in Nick Heidfeld’s direction.
If the team signs him, this would be his ideal opportunity to prove himself in front of top drivers of the world.
