Lotus Renault GP is expected to have taken the decision to let Nick Heidfeld take its cockpit for the upcoming 2011 season.
The driver made his way in the team after the tragic accident of the team driver, Robert Kubica earlier this month during a rally race, in Italy. The crash left the Pole in the hospital bed for an uncertain period with multiple fractures in his leg and hip-bone,
a broken arm and a completely crushed right hand. The 26-year old has already undergone two extensive surgeries of seven and nine hours each and is expected to have another one later this month. As per the medical reports, the driver is not expected to be
seen on the track before the end of the season.
The team had high hopes for the upcoming season. It hoped to mark some great races with Kubica’s assistance but is now left with no option but to hire another driver for the upcoming campaign.
Heidfeld, who has a decade long experience in the series and has given some spectacular races earlier in his career, was one of the options available for the lotus-based outfit. During his first expedition behind the Renault wheel, last week at Jerez, at
the second pre-season test session the driver succeeded in securing the team’s seat.
After a terrific test drive he was able to stamp the fastest lap of the day giving a sigh of relief to the tense team management. Apparently the team boss, Eric Boullier seems very satisfied with the Formula 1 veteran, yet he refrained from making any announcement.
While talking to the media Boullier stated that he needs a little more time before announcing the team’s verdict for next year’s driver.
However, Heidfeld feels very optimistic. He told the reporters, "I have the feeling I have passed this test. I could do no more than my best. Anyone can do that if they really want to, with little fuel and super soft tyres."
Only a couple of weeks back, until Kubica’s mishap, the driver was negotiating for the 2011 Mercedes test seat or was considering a switch to DTM. However, now he is close to winning a race seat with one of the top teams on the grid. He explained to the
press that benefitting from the misfortune of a friend is a "funny feeling".
He further explained, "You know very well that someone's bad luck might turn out well for you, and obviously I'd like to come back in different circumstances. But it's a chance and you have to use it."
The team had very high expectations from Kubica for the upcoming season. Whosoever comes in his place now, will have a lot to live up to. Only time will tell if Heidfeld turns out to be the best option for the team’s wrong decision.
