Nick Heidfeld got ‘scared’ of fire during 2011 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Lotus Renault GP driver Nick Heidfeld has said that after his car caught fire during the 2011 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, it was ‘quite scary’ for him as the fire was near his fuel tank as a result of which taking out the fire was quite difficult for
the marshals as well.
Heidfeld had to make a very quick exit as the fire on his car started to increase after which he stopped his car and literally jumped right out of it near turn 1.
“It was a lot more scary. At Barcelona I looked left, saw a small fire and had time to stop. This one, I looked straight, saw the fire and it got hot. I really felt the temperature. It was a bit scary - much more than Barcelona,” he told the media.
Other than that, he added that the team is still not aware of the cause for this fire but revealed that the sparks ignited after he turned on his car’s limiter in the pit lane.
“They are still looking into it. The stop was a bit longer, so that might be one of the reasons, but it is not like the stop was very long - it was not that I was stationary for 20 seconds or something. We are still investigating,” said Heidfeld.
As a result, the Renault driver had to retire out of the race and was unable to score points yet again. He has not been performing up to the mark as a result of which it is believed that he might get replaced by one of the test drivers of the team preferably
Bruno Senna.
Nevertheless, the Hungarian Grand Prix was quite disappointing for the team as Vitaly Petrov was unable to secure some points for the team either and now it seems that their main rivals Mercedes GP are quite ahead of them in the constructors’ standings.
Nick Heidfeld on the other hand is currently in 8th place just 2 points ahead of his teammate Vitaly Petrov and Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher.
