Nick Heidfeld happy with his maiden drive for 2010 season
The German driver Nick Heidfeld returns happy from the first two practice sessions of Singapore Grand Prix.
His pace might not have been the best of the day, yet he was happy as he was able to stand close to his teammate Kamui Kobayashi in both the practice sessions.
The thirty-three year old driver has had a racing expedition after a complete year as he had his last race in 2009 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Since then he has not experienced the stress and pressure of a Formula One track. As he now returned to
the Marina Bay Street Circuit of Singapore he once again felt tension tickling in his nerves as any driver does on a race weekend.
The entire season has seen him outside the track waiting for a stroke of luck as he did not get a race seat with any of the teams at the start of the season and has served as a test and reserve driver for Mercedes GP.
Finally, he found something better to do last month as he was signed by Pirelli as a test driver. However, this weekend finally his prayers were answered as he made his way back to the track after having signed a contract with BMW Sauber, a Swiss Formula
One team. He has made a deal with the team for the last final five races of the season.
The German took the opportunity brilliantly, although it was his first experience of driving Sauber's 2010 car, as he kept dogging his teammate while he turned and twisted his car under the flood lights of the arena.
Heidfeld wrapped up both the sessions at 13th place while his Japanese teammate, who has been with the team right from the start of the season, ended both at 12th place.
As he packed his day he was glad to exclaim, "Given it was my first day back in the team and also in the 2010 car I'm very happy. I enjoyed driving a lot”.
While expressing his experience he said that the day started a little tough for him as there were heavy rainfalls just before they went out to race and the track was wet.
However, he continued saying that he tried to keep himself cool and finish as many laps as possible. "For the second session we changed a few things, but it is clear two sessions are not enough to analyse everything. I see many areas where we can improve
the set-up of the car and areas where I can improve in getting the best out of the car”.
While recalling his last year’s race on the track he exclaimed that he has found many changes with regard to the bumps and track surface, which he thinks has made it easier than before.
Including this Sunday’s Grand Prix, the diver would complete his one hundred and seventieth Formula One race. He entered the series in 2000, after being the FIA International Formula 3000 champion for 1999.
The inclusion of another German driver in the series was embraced immensely by the fans and media as Michael Schumacher brought new glory and recognition to the country’s racers, however, he was not able to meet the high expectations very brilliantly.
So far he has not won any championship nor could he bag a victory at any Grand Prix during his long career though he has settled eight times for second place on the podium.
Now, as he returns once again to where he belongs, he hopes to give some good finishes before the season ends and so do his fans.
