Nick Heidfeld makes the case to become Kubica’s replacement at Renault
Renault is expected to make their decision for Kubica’s replacement for the upcoming season on Monday. Fans and observers are awaiting the outcome of their decision eagerly. Eric Boullier, the team boss, will decide who takes up the vacant position left
behind by the injured Kubica. As of now, it is a tight race between Nick Heidfeld, Pedro de la Rosa and Vitantonio Liuzz. Heidfeld becomes the front-runner for Kubica’s spot by topping the test drive sheets.
Hiedfeld was selected for the four day test in Jerez to drive the new McLaren MP4-26. His potential and aptitude for racing is evident from his performance in the test runs. He has excellent pace and strength and his name appears at the top of the tables
for his timings in the test drives.
The loss of Kubica for the season is a set-back for Renault. They need a driver in his place but not just a competitive one but someone who is good enough to play the role that Kubica did. In the present scenario, only German driver, Nick Heidfeld, seems
capable enough to shoulder the responsibility.
In the 2007 season, Heidfeld and Kubica struggled for starting status on the BMW team. Hiedfeld came in the sport after leading in F3000 and Kubica had joined a few years later to instant success. They got along together well and were shaping up to be a
stellar pairing for BMW. The companionship ended with Kubica moving to Renault. Heidfeld stayed with BMW until they decided to withdraw from the sport and put the promising driver in limbo.
His future was uncertain until he was welcomed in 2010 by Mercedes. The German driver rightly deserves a place in the highest tier of the racing world. Renault has made a well thought-out decision to approach him as a replacement and he is the most natural
driver to cover for Kubica during the season. Senna and Luizz cannot perform at the same level as Heidfeld.
Also if Heidfeld joins in Kubica’s place, it would pay his old teammate the necessary reverence that Renault fans want. Commenting on his views about joining the team he said that, "You know very well that someone's bad luck might turn out well for you,
and obviously I'd like to come back in different circumstances. But it's a chance and you have to use it. I've sent Robert a text message and I will visit him in hospital, but I am hearing that his condition is improving every day. You can tell he is very
popular here and is the clear number one. I hope he can come back as fast as possible.”
Kubica fans are wishing for a speedy recovery but are also hoping that Heidfeld can help Renault stay afloat till Kubica’s return.
