Nick Heidfeld says Ferrari in check, Red Bull and McLaren still far ahead – Formula 1
Renault driver, Nick Heidfeld, commented on the team’s performance and stated that Renault is working well to keep the Ferrari team in check. The German also said that the team’s ambition is to win races but Red Bull and McLaren are running far ahead of
the pack.
Renault team started the season without their ace driver, Robert Kubica, who was severely injured in a rally crash. Renault opted to go for the German driver, Heidfeld, alongside an inexperienced Russian ,Vitaly Petrov.
As soon as the 2011 Formula 1 season kicked off, Renault’s drivers, Heidfeld and Petrov, were landing on the podium. First, Petrov scored a third place finish in Melbourne, keeping Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso behind. In the Malaysian Grand Prix, Heidfeld took
charge and landed on the lowest step of the podium.
Renault’s performance in the Chinese Grand Prix was not good and Petrov scored points at the finish and Heidfeld was left empty handed. Still, Heidfeld is confident of Renault’s comeback.
Heidfeld was happy about prospects so far and said, “We are working very hard. The team has made big improvements over the last one-and-a-half years, and if we can keep that development speed up, we can maintain the early-season momentum.”
He further added that the 2011 season is not going to be any easy one for any team because after the first three races, some teams are improving comprehensively.
“It's certainly not going to be easy because we are competing with the likes of Ferrari now, who we will definitely try to beat. Mercedes seems to have improved, and McLaren and Red Bull are still ahead, but the team's ambitions and targets are clear – we
want to go to the top,” said the German.
Heidfeld is yet to score his first race win after having more than 170 race starts. He will have a good chance to do it in somewhat more fast and reliable car. So far, the German has one podium finish to his name in the 2011 season and will look to score
more as this might be his only chance in the Renault car before Kubica jumps in, halfway through the season.
