Nick Heidfeld says point finish for struggling Renault in Valencia is priority – Formula 1 news
Renault’s Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld has said that he will look to score some points in the upcoming European Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Heidfeld, currently eighth on the drivers’ championship table, added that the Valencia circuit is somewhat different to the previous two street circuits, Monaco and Canada, for which the car will need more downforce.
Heidfeld crashed out in the Montreal Grand Prix after his front wing was struck beneath his car and he went off track, escaping major injury.
But for the Valencia GP, the German is confident to improve on his current statistics.
“It's [Valencia] another street circuit but different to both Monaco. This is a different type of track, faster than Monaco, slower than Canada. I always want to get the maximum out of the car and each situation. I am sure I'll be able to fight for a strong
points finish here,” commented Heidfeld.
Talking about the car condition, Heidfeld stated, “I think it will also require the car to be set-up with a bit more downforce than we needed in Montreal. It's a reasonably recent race to join the F1 calendar but I've been there before so we will see how
we get on.”
Renault started their 2011 campaign on a high note as they bagged two back-to-back podiums in the opening two races of the season in Australia and Malaysia. However, after that sudden burst, the team found themselves struggling to get into the top ten finishers.
Since the last five races of the season, Renault managed to keep their car among points due to which they are still fourth on the constructors’ table ahead of the Mercedes team.
However, their position on the constructors’ table will be challenged in the upcoming Valencia race because the Mercedes team is improving fast and it is only a matter of time that the silver arrow car finds its way past Renault.
Nevertheless, the season continues in Valencia and it will be interesting to see how Heidfeld manages to keep his team’s current position intact on the constructors’ table.
