Nick Heidfeld still positive that he can secure a seat in Formula 1 – Formula 1 news
Nick Heidfeld, former Lotus Renault GP driver, is still positive that he can secure a seat in Formula 1 in near future.
Heidfeld seems quite optimistic about a comeback and has not really given up all hopes of securing a seat in Formula 1. He said the opportunities available to him were limited but he did not think his F1 career was nearing its end.
Heidfeld was substituted by the Brazilian driver Bruno Senna - nephew of the famous late Ayrton Senna, in September 2011. This replacement was made ahead of the 2011 Belgian Grand Prix, which marked the end of Heidfeld’s career with the Lotus Renault team.
He officially left the team on September 2, 2011.
Heidfeld had also taken this matter to the court but could not succeed in getting his seat back.
The German driver had started his Formula 1 career in 2000. He entered into a contract with Sauber which was the only time when he had a complete season in F1 driving his BMW Sauber during the 2009 Formula 1 season. Later on in 2010, he was called in by
Mercedes GP as a test driver for their team.
In February 2011, the 34-year-old German driver was confirmed by the Lotus Renault GP team as a replacement driver for Robert Kubica for the 2011 Formula 1 season who had suffered serious injuries due to a rally accident.
His stay with the Lotus Renault team was not for long and he had to part ways with the team half way in the season.
While speaking to Autosport, Heidfeld said, “I am more than hopeful I can secure a seat. Next year's cockpits are limited but we are working on it.”
The future of this German driver is still uncertain and it is hard to predict the team for which he might be racing in the future, especially when the top running teams of the sport are unlikely to change their current drivers’ line-up for the 2012 Formula
1 season.
