Nick Heidfeld unlikely to end up with Team Mercedes
It was speculated that since Nick Heidfeld was forced out of Team BMW Sauber after he drove for the team for the last five races of the 2010 season, he would join Mercedes as a reserve driver once again, as he left the latter team to drive for Sauber during
the mid of 2010 Formula 1 season.
However, it was recently revealed that his chances of ending up with Mercedes are now bleak, as the team announced that they are talking to potential candidates about their reserve driver role.
“We already have two German drivers. At the moment we are in conversation with potential candidates,” Team Mercedes’ Head of Marketing Joachim Schmidt told the media.
Nick Heidfeld was unable to prove himself after he was given a chance by Sauber while nearing the end of 2010 Formula 1 season. Nick scored just 6 points in the drivers’ standings from a total of 5 races; quite a contrasting result to his teammate Kamui
Kobayashi, who is a rookie driver.
Heidfeld initially joined Pirelli as their official test driver to ensure that they come up with the best possible compounds for the 2011 season, but after he was offered a spot at Sauber as a replacement for Pedro de la Rosa, the German couldn’t resist
and decided to get back on the track once again.
Recently, Sauber’s management has revealed that they will replace Nick Heidfeld with Sergio Perez alongside Kamui Kobayashi for the 2011 season.
Mercedes was the most likely option for Nick, but it now seems that the German might not even be the part of the 2011 Formula 1 season, as there are no reserve driver spots left for the driver.
Mercedes currently has drivers like Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher; the top drivers of the series. The team will reveal its new car ahead of the first pre-season test session on February 2nd, 2011, which will take place in Valencia. Red Bull
Racing Team will also launch its new car at the same event, and it will be interesting to see how its new car performs.
