Nick Heidfeld was set to replace Vitaly Petrov for the 2011 Formula 1 season
The latest addition to Lotus Renault GP drivers’ line-up Nick Heidfeld recently revealed that he was close to a deal with the team as a replacement for Vitaly Petrov and he was going to drive alongside Robert Kubica for them in 2011 when they did not confirm
their drivers’ line-up.
However, later on, the team revealed that they have decided to keep Petrov for another year and as a result, Nick was left ‘team-less’ yet again.
“I know the people in charge of the team very well, because during the 2010 season I talked with them about coming here for 2011,” said Nick.
However, it seems that Nick ended up with Renault either way since Robert Kubica recently went through a horrifying accident and it was revealed by the team that he will not be able to drive for the team at least for this year as a result of an injury to
his right hand.
The team revealed that they were going to choose a replacement for Robert out of three drivers that are Nick Heidfeld, Bruno Senna and Vitantonio Liuzzi. According to some rumours, it has been revealed that Robert Kubica wants Tonio to replace him but since
it has already been confirmed that Nick would replace him, nothing can change the team’s decision now.
Nevertheless, Nick Heidfeld is quite confident about the 2011 Formula 1 season and he vows to perform at his best.
“I was disappointed when I went no further with Sauber at the end of 2010. But I believed firmly that my career was not yet over, which is why I trained harder than usual in the winter,” added Heidfeld.
Nick Heidfeld was the quickest driver when he tested the new Renault car in Jerez during the second pre-season test session.
“In the longer term I still want to win the world championship. I won't be put off from my goal,” said the German.
The 2011 Formula 1 season is going to be quite important for Nick as his future would depend a lot on his performance this season. We can say that we would definitely see Nick Heidfeld at his best in 2011 and it would be interesting to see how good his ‘best’
performance really is.
