Nick O'Hern shoots course record, leads Frys.com Open
Nick O’Hern has not had a successful season this year. He is currently winless on the PGA Tour. However, the Australian has given himself a huge chance of bagging in his first title of the year by shooting a course record at CordeValle.
Nick shot a magnificent bogey free round of nine-under 62, to take the lead after the first round at Frys.com Open.
The Australian has equaled the course record by shooting 62 but, more importantly, he enjoys a three-stroke lead over Jonattan Vegas, Nicolas Colsaerts and Derek Ernst.
Nick, who will be turning 41 in a week’s time, hit 14 out of 18 greens in regulation and needed only 23 puts to close out his first round.
O’Hern knows that his work is still cut out, as he bids to earn a tour card for the 2013 season. Presently, the Aussie is at the 144th spot in the money tour list.
He needs to climb inside the top-125 to earn the full time PGA Tour card for the next season. Similar performances are required by Nick to make sure that he continues to play on the PGA Tour next season.
"I know I've got my work cut out as far as the money list goes," O'Hern said. "I know what I need to do. I need to play good golf. I've been doing that, I just haven't had the results unfortunately. Today is a perfect start to what I need to do".
This is by far the best round Nick has shot in recent times and it comes at a very crucial time as well. The Aussie, however, was very happy with himself, especially the way he played on Thursday.
"I just hit the ball lovely all day, was able to hit it close," O'Hern said. "I started off having to make a few par putts, crucial ones, sort of four- five-footers. Once I made those, it got me going. Then I made a few birdies on the front nine, which was
my back nine".
The British Open Champion Ernie Els shot an even par round of 71. Surely, Ernie would have hoped for a better outing than this one but at least he is not over par.
