Nick O’Hern and Nicolas Colsaerts finish poorly at CordeValle
Nick O’Hern and Nicolas Colsaerts started the Frys.com Open in a magnificent fashion but both of them could not capitulate on their success of the first few rounds.
The Australian Nick O’Hern equalled the course record on Thursday, when he shot nine-under 62 in the first round a CordeValle.
However, for some reason, he faded away in the next three rounds. The Aussie shot three consecutive rounds of 71 to finish for an average T22 finish.
It is surprising that Nick shot a flawless round on Thursday but, on the next three days, he had no control over his shots. He was all over the course on Friday.
Moreover, on Saturday, especially, he was pretty wayward with his shots and his approaches were not up to the standards.
On Sunday, things improved slightly for him. He opened up with a few pars, then birdied on the par-4 fourth.
However, his joy was short lived, as he double bogeyed the sixth hole and then came the stretch of eleven consecutive pars.
The world number 224 saved the blemishes for the day by birdying the eighteenth hole to finish with an even par score.
The Australian has, so far, not won on the PGA Tour but the way he started the tournament it looked as if his drought on the PGA Tour might be over. However, it was not meant to be like that.
O’Hern’s run of inconsistent performances continues. So far, he has missed 12 cuts out of 24, but even in the tournaments he made cuts, he ended up with mediocre performances, like this one.
His trend has been somewhat like this – so good on one day and then slumping on the next.
The Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, too, started the tournament brightly and looked as if he might win his first PGA Tour title. The world number 35 faded away in the last two rounds to finish at a disappointing T35 finish.
A round of two-over 73 for the likes of Nicolas was really not up to the mark. He needed a better finish than this one, to boost up his chances of earning the PGA tour card for the next season.
The Belgian bomber would need to sharpen up his clubs for the next tournament. He really cannot afford anymore slip ups.
