Nick Phipps likely to be included in Australian Rugby World Cup 2011 squad - Rugby news
The rising star of Super Rugby 2011, Nick Phipps, is likely to be included in the Rugby World Cup 2011 squad for the Wallabies. Phipps has grabbed the attention of the national selectors for his brilliant output in the current Super Rugby championship.
Recently, Phipps won the Australian Super Rugby Rookie of the Year award, surprising many big guns from Australia.
Phipps made his Super Rugby debut this year for the Melbourne Rebels, the newly established Super Rugby Australian conference. The scrum-half presented a wonderful individual contribution to the weakest side of the ongoing Super Rugby campaign to become
the Rookie of the Year. The Rebels ended their inaugural Super Rugby season exactly at the bottom of point’s tables.
Earlier, Phipps remained highly successful during the Common Wealth games 2010, played in New Delhi, India. He kicked eight successful conversions and a splendid try during the event. Phipps was one of the major contributors in the Australian Sevens and
led the side through to the final of the CWG and secured a silver medal for their team.
In his short conversation with the media, Nick Phipps said that, “I haven't really thought about that so far ... me and Burgo get on really well both coming from Sydney Uni and I know how disappointed he'd be breaking his hand before the semi-finals. I've
certainly got a great opportunity that I want to make the most of."
The Wallabies hooker Stephen Moore also appreciated the young man and said that if he gets a chance against Samoa, he will learn a lot from the senior campaigners on the team. He added that, "We've had a lot of good young players coming through the ranks
for a number of years now and you can see their development and there's certainly some really good depth in the front row now,"
The Wallabies team is scheduled to play a test match against Samoa on July 17, which will help them to announce their final squad for Rugby World Cup 2011. RWC will start on September 9, this year in New Zealand.
