Nick Savva grabs £10,000 as Westmead Maldini bags the Coral Essex Vase Final in fine style at Romford
Nick Savva's champion hound, Westmead Maldini, came out victorious in the Coral Essex Vase Final, held at Romford on the 14th of December, offering a whopping prize money of £10,000. The race was set over a distance of 575 metres, for six contestants that succeeded in passing the pre-requisites for the race.
Nick Savva trained Westmead Maldini got hold of the mouth-watering prize money by finishing the assigned distance in a quick 35.25 seconds. The winner was also a 2/1 favourite for the race.
Out of Droopys Maldini and Mega Delight in December 2008, the 3-year-old Westmead Maldini fell into high gear almost instantly after leaving the fifth stall.
He faced some level of obstruction, mid-way through the track, falling behind to the fifth position. However, the champ recovered well to get back in the leading position and from thereon, held the lead firmly throughout the race.
Westmead Maldini led by a good 4 ¼ lengths, leaving Roses Rockin, trained by Derek Knight, behind to finish as the runner-up.
Roses Rockin crossed the wire in 35.59 seconds by maintaining a quick pace in the beginning, making it possible for him to race from the fifth position to first.
However, unfortunate for Derek Knight's hound, as soon as Westmead Maldini recovered from his hiccup, he snatched the lead and left Roses Rockin trailing for the rest of the race.
To finish the race after the runner-up was P Simmonds trained Hugo You Go, who also paced up soon after leaving his stall, and after battling through the middle of the track, he fought for the second position, but stumbled and took 35.95 seconds to cross the wire behind Roses Rockin.
The entries by Mark Wallis, Seamus Cahill and G Oswald were positioned fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
Aero Majestic missed the prior rank by 2 ¾ lengths and made it to the fourth position in 36.17 seconds. Emperor Leon was just two lengths behind him and clocked 36.33 seconds to finish.
The last one to leave the track was G Oswald’s trainee, Judicial Academy, who was at a marking distance of 4 ¾ lengths from Emperor Leon, taking the longest, 36.71 seconds, to conclude the race.
By winning this final, Westmead Maldini has struck his fifth straight victory in the last two months, four of them being at Romford. All the five races were open races, which adds to the glory of his profile.
He has set Roses Rockin second in the last two races, the two hounds competed in together.
Further plans for Westmead Maldini’s races have not been disclosed as yet, but there is no doubt that this is one successful hound, bound to provide much entertainment for spectators in his upcoming races.
