Nick Watney aims Ryder Cup spot, entering the Deutsche Bank Championship
Nick Watney entered the final round of the 2011 Deutsche Bank Championship with an eight-under par overall score and was among the favourites to surge to the top of the leaderboard at the end of the tournament.
However, it did not happen, as the water hazard on the second hole forced him to claim an 11, which completely destroyed his chances of getting to the top.
After completing 18 holes, he signed the scorecard with an 80, which also pushed him to an over-par score for the tournament. This year at TPC Boston, he plans to display a better performance, in a bid to finish the hole in a better way.
“I learned not to hit it in the water, and once I hit it in the water not to ground my club in the water, in the hazard,” Watney said. “It was very deflating. It took me out of the tournament. You never want to do that that early, especially on a hole I
had hit a good tee shot”.
“So it was disappointing to have a blow-up like that. But I hope I’m in contention again and have a chance to go for that green. I am sure I can do better than 11 shots this time,” he added.
Last week, he thrashed The Barclays’ field, the first leg of the US PGA Tour Playoffs, by recording a three-stroke victory over Brandt Snedeker.
The victory also dragged him to the number one spot in the FedEx Cup standings, entering the second phase of the Playoffs.
He now aims to retain the top spot, eyeing the $10 million purse offered with the FedEx Cup trophy.
Besides the FedEx Cup, he is also eager to impress Davis Love III, the US Ryder Cup team captain, with another strong finish in Massachusetts.
There are a total of four spots available in the team and Love will decide on which players to be selected to represent the United States in the biennial event, scheduled next month.
“I’ve heard he said he’s looking for a hot player, and I would have to classify myself as a hot player,” the American said.
