Nick Watney emerges victorious at WGC-Cadillac Championship of PGA Tour
The WGC-Cadillac Championship finally came to a rather dramatic conclusion for a lot of players; it was the American, Nick Watney who came from behind to lift the championship trophy and the winner’s cheque. Watney had a final day score of five-under par,
67 which was enough for him to win by a margin of two shots.
Dustin Johnson, who managed to finish at the second spot, had a chance in after shooting seven-under par, 65 on the third day. He had a deficit of just two strokes over the winner and failed to produce brilliance on the final day.
Watney slowly after the first round was moved up in the leader board. The 29-year old was placed at the second position before the final round started and was paired with Johnson. His score card on the final day shows seven birdies followed by two bogeys.
The only two drop shots came on hole numbers 4 and 11 where his drives were not accurate. He had a total four day aggregate score of sixteen-under par, 272.
Nick was overwhelmed with the way he played throughout the four rounds. There were a couple of blemishes in his rounds but it was overshadowed by the birdies he made. This is his third win playing on the PGA Tour and is hoping to continue his form in next
month’s major tournament of Masters.
After the final round, Watney said, "I was not nervous during the final round. I really wanted to take care of business and to grasp this opportunity. I actually love that feeling; you don't get it too often. Every player gets nervous but, one has to come
up to the expectations.”
As for Johnson, he played exceptionally well on the third day and on Sunday was probably not the right day for him. The 26-year old, was rather disappointed with his final round as he finished two strokes behind the winner. He was placed on top of the leader
board before the final round started, but it seems the pressure got to him.
Johnson had a moderate final round of one-under par, 71. His card shows two birdies and a single bogey. The only drop shot for the day came on the par-4, 16th where he missed the fairway. From thereon, he had to be content with a bogey. This would
have been a great win for him before the Masters.
Anders Hansen of Denmark and Italian Francesco Molinari both finished for the third position. They had a total aggregate score of thirteen-under par, 275 and had a deficit of three shots over the leader.
Hansen had a great final round of five-under par, 67. He was in exquisite touch with his tee shots and smooth putting. There were five birdies marked on his card and lost no stroke. The European Tour player was quite happy with the way he finished the tournament.
Former World number one Tiger Woods made a move on the final day to finish among the top-ten on the leader board. Woods had a superb final round of six-under par, 66 to finish with a total four day score of eight-under par, 280. He was all charged up on
the final day and carded seven birdies and a single bogey. The fourteen-time major Champion was more than happy with his performance on the final day as he is all ready to face the challenge in Masters.
The current world number one, Martin Kaymer finished joint at the 24th position after four days. He still holds his honourable golf rankings but was not satisfied with his performance.
Defending champion Ernie Els of South Africa finished with a total score of seven-under par, 281 and was tied at the 15th slot.
