Nick Watney heads for the Deutsche Bank Championship, eyeing the FedEx Cup
After winning the curtain raiser for the 2012 US PGA Tour Playoffs, The Barclays, Nick Watney surged to the top of the FedEx Cup standings.
This week, he will appear in the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston, in a bid to strengthen his position to become the tour’s season champion for 2012.
Last year, he was leading the points list, entering the Playoffs, thanks to his two PGA Tour victories at the WGC-Cadillac Championship and the AT&T National.
However, he failed to keep the momentum going and handed over the FedEx Cup to Bill Haas, after performing poorly in each of the four Playoffs’ tournaments.
This year, he did not have a strong track record on the tour, entering the one-month swing of four tournaments.
Yet, he managed to turn his average season into a great by surging to the FedEx Cup point list. He now plans to hold the top position till the end of the Tour Championship, in order to make his dream of becoming the FedEx Cup champion come true this year.
“As far as getting into stuff next year and positioning yourself for the FedEx Cup, [The Barclays] has proven to be maybe the biggest of the four, just because you play well here, you can move so far,” Watney said.
“I’m just very, very happy right now. It’s been not quite the year I would have wanted, but this really makes it all forgotten”.
According to his PGA Tour stats, he did not finish outside the top-10 in any of the first five starts that he made last year. Conversely, he had to play 10 events this year, to list his name among the top-10 players on the leaderboard.
Watney told that he received some putting tips from Darrell Kestner, a professional from the Long Island club, which helped him record the maiden victory of his 2012 golf campaign.
He also admitted that he was having some attitude problems on the course, which he settled down after consulting with his caddie, Chad Reynolds.
“My attitude, you know, my caddie said that — sometimes I ask him, ‘Where do I lose the most shots to the top players?’ And he said, without a doubt, it’s my attitude,” Watney said.
