Nick Watney ready for the AT&T National title defence
Nick Watney is looking forward to defend the AT&T National title against a strong field at the Congressional Country Club, scheduled to start from Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Even though the host course was changed for this year’s edition, Watney is happy to return to action at the 2011 US Open venue.
While talking to the PGA Tour website on Wednesday, he told that he does not have anything good to point out from his last year’s performance on the course, as he missed the cut after carding 75 and 73 in the opening two rounds.
Yet, he believes that the course is in great shape and the greens are firmer compared to the past. Therefore, he is expecting a good competition ahead of him.
“I have some great memories from this event,” he said. “Even though it's not at the same golf course, it's nice to be back defending. This course is in great shape, I think maybe even better than last year for the U.S. Open. Should be a good test, and looking
forward to the week”.
According to him, the course will be a bit difficult to play on this year, making the competition tougher.
He said that the course was really easy last year, considering the fact that many players succeeded in recording under-par scores in the 2011 US Open.
“I think it is playing harder this time. The greens were soft, much, much softer than we expect for a U.S. Open,” he said of the 2011 edition.
“Rory obviously broke a ton of records, but second place was 8-under, I believe. It was not typical of what we usually see for a U.S. Open”.
The golf commentators believe that Watney will have to play really hard in order to successfully defend his title, as he does not have a good track record in the current PGA Tour season.
He only has two top-10 and five top-25 finishes in the 15 PGA Tour events he has played so far. Therefore, he needs to consider tweaking his game and put his best foot forward at Congressional in order to give a tough time to his rivals.
