Nick Watney takes halfway lead at the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
Nick Watney fired an eight-under par 64 in the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship to take the halfway lead at a 12-under par on Friday, May 4, 2012.
Watney got off to a solid start, as he made four birdies on the front nine of the course to go four-under par.
His back-nine performance was even better, as he carded three consecutive birdies starting from the 10th hole.
“Well, I played great. I hit the ball probably the best I have all year,” he said. “I putted well, and I'm very, very pleased. But we're only halfway done, so I'm really looking forward to the weekend”.
While playing the par-five 15th hole, he reached the green in just two shots that he later converted into an amazing 41-foot eagle.
“I haven't made a lot of those this year, so that was exciting,” he said. “It's always nice to make eagles, especially here. Definitely very pleased with that hole”.
In addition to that, he also had chances of making birdies on the last three holes that he missed.
On the 16th hole, he made a great shot from the bunker that lipped the hole and went away. On the 17th and 18th holes, he tried for birdie putts from around 50 feet each.
However, the ball stopped inches away from the hole, converting them into par shots on both the holes.
“For as well as I hit it, I made the putts I should have made, but still left a few out there, which I guess you can always say in this game. Very excited for the weekend, and I'm pleased with the way I'm playing,” he said.
In the meantime, the overnight shared leader, Webb Simpson, carded a total of five birdies and a lone bogey to take the second spot on the leaderboard.
His two-round score was 11-under par as he added a four-under to the seven-under opening round score.
Stewart Cink, Ben Crane, D.A. Points and John Senden were tied for the third place after carding a 10-under par two-round score each.
Crane was another player who recorded an eight-under par score on Friday with the help of seven birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey.
